The Balance of November

Nov. 23rd
"Empty Bowls Harvest Celebration"

     On Sunday, November 23 our UUCC congregation will enjoy a delicious soup and bread luncheon immediately after our church service. The Youth Outreach Group has created beautiful ceramic bowls for serving the soup, and the Youth Covenant Group has made two wonderful soups for us to sample. A variety of breads from around the world will be baked by our congregation members to complement the soup.
     This activity will serve as a fund raiser with all proceeds being donated to SMILE food pantry in Lusby, MD. There will be 3 ways in which you can contribute to this very worthy charitable activity. The first is to purchase a bowl of soup for a nominal fee without purchasing a ceramic bowl made by the Youth Outreach participants. The second way is to purchase both a bowl of soup and a ceramic bowl for a suggested donation of $10-20. Checks may be made out to SMILE. The third way to participate is to contribute dry goods and canned goods to give to SMILE food pantry. It would be wonderful if along with the purchase of soup or a bowl, we also each contribute canned and dried goods. At this particular time, all food pantry donations are appreciably down because of the economy.

 "Understanding Racism and Prejudice: Establishing Empathy"
     Racism takes all forms which we may not even be aware of.  Many Caucasians live in a world that is taken for granted, never really knowing what it is like to be one of The Other, no matter what the race or ethnicity may be.  In this service we will attempt to open the doors to understanding how racism and prejudice affects our personal worlds and the world of those who must live with the daily reality of being different and not a part of the privileged class.

Sources of Unitarian Universalist Wisdom
The living tradition which we share
draws from many sources:

  • Direct experience of that transcending mystery and wonder, affirmed in all cultures, which moves us to a renewal of the spirit and an openness to the forces which create and uphold life;
  • Words and deeds of prophetic women and men which challenge us to confront powers and structures of evil with justice, compassion, and the transforming power of love;
  • Wisdom from the world's religions which inspires us in our ethical and spiritual life;
  • Jewish and Christian teachings which call us to respond to God's love by loving our neighbors as ourselves;
  • Humanist teachings which counsel us to heed the guidance of reason and the results of science, and warn us against idolatries of the mind and spirit.
  • Spiritual teachings of earth-centered traditions which celebrate the sacred circle of life and instruct us to live in harmony with the rhythms of nature.

Grateful for the religious pluralism which enriches and ennobles our faith, we are inspired to deepen our understanding and expand our vision. As free congregations we enter into this covenant, promising to one another our mutual trust and support.
