RE Calendar Information

Most RE sessions invite participants to share in an exploration of an ancient Hebrew text.  Storytelling, discussion of timeless themes, and hands-on activities make up each lesson.  Usually, two classes meet, creating age-appropriate options for pre-K/elementary children and middle/high school-aged youth.

October 2009

10/4:
 
RE this Sunday features an exploration of the Cain & Abel story.  For the discovery time, the elementary group will make Cold Pea Soup and the middle/high school group will retell the tale with a twist:  the siblings will be sisters.  Some of the UU values connected to the timeless tale:  identifying internal/external factors of anger, forgiving

10/11:  RE this Sunday will feature an exploration of the Tower of Babel story.  For the discovery time, the elementary group will erect “babble” towers and the middle/high school group will explore the original Hebrew text, eat some “Babble fish” and think about modern towers of babble.  Some of the UU values connected to the timeless tale:  making the effort to communicate with and understand others, seeking harmony and balance.  Teacher in elementary group:  Eliza Garth with Dana Van Abbema assisting; teacher in middle group: Marilyn Ruark with Laura Webb assisting.

10/18:  RE this Sunday will feature a combined group of all RE learners.  The class will explore how the natural world communicates and enjoy a nature walk on the grounds of the SMHEC.  Please dress appropriately!  Fred Ruark will be teaching with Laura Webb assisting.

10/24:  ACLT Volunteer Experience, 9 a.m.  Youth aged 12 and up can work on the invasive plant removal project.  To register children under 12 to participate, please notify the RE Coordinator by 10/20.

10/25:  This Sunday, the service will be intergenerational as all ages join together to celebrate the Sukuth harvest festival, explore what makes home “home” and plan the UUCC’s service project for those experiencing homelessness.  Nursery services will be available.  Laura Webb will lead this intergenerational service.

November 2009

11/01:
 
RE this Sunday will feature an exploration of the tale of Joseph & His Brothers.   For the discovery time, the elementary class will create puppets for the tale, and the middle/high school group will make hummus, and chat about sibling rivalry over the RE-made treat.  Some of the UU values connected  to the timeless tale:  honesty, humility, and anti-bully attitudes.  Teacher in elementary group:

11/01:  Soup Making for Youth Group, 1 p.m.  The middle and high school youth are invited to prepare soup for the fundraiser for the SMILE food pantry.  For more information, please contact the RE Coordinator or Rev. Staubitz.

11/08:  RE this Sunday will feature an exploration of the tale Joseph & His Dreams.   For the discovery time, the elementary class will complete their puppet play begun the previous week, and the middle/high school youth will screen Joseph & the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.  Some of the UU values connected to the timeless tale:  seeking truth and justice, fairness.  Teacher In elementary group:  Dana Van Abbema with Laura Webb assisting; teacher in middle/high school group:  Eliza Garth with Laura Starks assisting.

11/15:  RE this Sunday will feature the Timeless Themes Jeopardy game-  a chance for RE learners in the elementary and middle/high school groups to review, revisit, or gain exposure to the tales shared thus far in the classrooms in a format that pays homage to the popular game show.  There will be prizes!  Laura Webb will be teaching, with the assistant TBD.

11/22: RE learners will join the rest of the congregation for an intergenerational service.  Nursery services will be available.

December 2009

12/06:
 
RE this Sunday will feature the tale of Moses in the Bullrushes.  For the discovery activity, the elementary group will make Baby in the Blanket snacks to share, and the middle/high school group will create edible River Flowers.  UU values connected to the tale include the search for truth, justice and freedom from oppression.  Teacher for the elementary class:  Senan Brady with Laura Starks assisting; teacher for the middle/high school class:  TBD with Denise Lourette-Brady assisting.

12/13:  RE this Sunday will explore the tale of Moses and the Burning Bush.  For the discovery activity, the elementary group will recreate the scene with very cool props, and the middle/high school group will make candles.  UU values connected to the tale include an exploration of finding a vocation and the search for truth and meaning.  Teacher for the elementary group:  Dana Van Abbema with Laura Webb assisting; teacher for the middle/high school group:  Karin Ryon with April Tucker assisting.

12/20: RE learners will join the rest of the congregation for an intergenerational service.  Nursery services will be available.
